New Decorative Finishes from Crown Help Beverage Brands Boost Shelf Presence, ...  (Company news)

...Build Consumer Loyalty

Crown Bevcan Europe & Middle East, a business unit of Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) (Crown) (www.crowncork.com), has been debuting several decorative finishes at BrauBeviale 2018 to help beverage brands enhance visual appeal and foster greater interaction with consumers. The finishes are an extension of Crown’s “Colourful World” technology portfolio, which addresses the need for greater differentiation at the point of purchase and helps brands push the boundaries of functionality and creativity.

The new additions to the family include:
-MattTactile and TactileEdge™ are advancements of the Company’s Tactile finish and run at extreme energy levels, without loss of line speed;
-MirrorGloss is the next generation of the Company’s existing gloss varnish;
-Frost gives cans a dewy look;
-Sparkle, which features actual sparkling elements, is ideal for adding a premium look to packaging.

At the show, Crown has also been featuring its Reactinks™ technology – an ink that reacts to, and changes color at each stage of consumption, for maximum consumer engagement. Affected by both temperature and sunlight, the Reactinks™ technology will reveal the amount of cold beverage left in a can, as well as display different colours in the areas shaded from light, for example, where a consumer holds the can.

To demonstrate the impact that decorative finishes can have, Crown’s booth includes several recent commercial launches. Among them there are Coca-Cola Turkey’s thermochromic summer designs featuring thermochromic inks as well as new cans created for Mountain Dew that utilize fluorescent ink. After introducing a brighter colored bottle to the market, Mountain Dew duplicated the neon effect on a special edition can range across the Middle East.

Other innovative technologies that were featured at Crown’s booth include:
-Emprint™ – Crown’s latest finish that creates a ‘micro-embossed’ effect on the surface of the can. Emprint™ enables features such as a premium tactile feel or grip on the can as well as helps accentuate a selected part of the design. The light refracted by the textured surface offers the container new dimensions by creating a matt, gloss or 3D effect.
-ClickerCrown – A modernization of the original crown cork (also known as the bottle cap) developed by the Company’s founder, William Painter, in 1892. The twist off crown cork produces a fresh ‘click’ sound when opened, providing visual, audible and tactile interaction during the opening experience.
-CrownConnect™ – Developed in conjunction with EVRYTHNG, a GS1 US Solution Partner, the technology made its commercial debut with FACT water and its Almond Blockchain platform. CrownConnect™ serves as the enabler by providing the scannable codes necessary for access. In addition to helping brands building loyalty through rewards and contests, the platform also delivers critical purchasing data that can help to shape future marketing and promotional campaigns.

“Our goal at Crown is to help beverage brands continue to find exciting ways to innovate and adapt to the changing demands of consumers and retailers,” comments Florian Combe, Marketing Manager NDP at Crown Bevcan Europe & Middle East. “From initial concept to the final stages of a project, Crown is a dedicated partner every step of the way, helping brands excel in a competitive marketplace. We listen to our customers’ needs, strive to understand their vision and deliver the packaging that best serves their products through our design and industry expertise.”

Crown Helps Coca-Cola Turkey Go Thermochromic for Summer Promo  (Company news)

Coca-Cola Turkey has launched its summer promotional range, making unprecedented use of thermochromic inks to add color, function and fun to ten new aluminium beverage can designs. Historically, one or two thermochromic inks have been combined to communicate temperature changes. For the first time, Coca-Cola Turkey is using thermochromic ink technology as a true decorative tool, making it an integral part of how the can looks. Four separate inks have been used to create bright designs that stand out when the cans are chilled and the drinks ready for consumption.

The designs featured on Coke Red and Coke Zero beverage cans all have summer themes, ranging from ice cubes and palm trees to sandals and sailing boats. The images are colourless at ambient temperature and change to colourful patterns when the drink is chilled and ready for consumption.

“Crown worked with dedication to facilitate the complex printing process of the four inks, a novelty in our line of work,” said Matt Twiss, Marketing & Business Development Director at Crown Bevcan Europe & Middle East. “While we have used thermochromic ink technology for many commercial applications, the Coca-Cola campaign highlights its potential as a decorative tool, conveying a message of freshness and fun in an aesthetically pleasing and original way. The inks also encourage consumers to interact with the brand at the point of sale and during consumption.”

Coca-Cola launched the summer campaign with a video featuring Turkish movie stars taking a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean and enjoying a Coke.

The cans are produced at Crown’s Osmaniye plant, in central southern Turkey, a state-of-the-art production facility with the capacity to produce approximately two billion cans per year. A total of 70 million units will be produced in 2018 for this campaign alone, with a large number already in the retail supply chain.

CrownConnect™ Facilitates New Industry-First 'Almond' Blockchain Technology For Fact Water  (Company news)

In a first for the beverage industry, Crown Bevcan Europe & Middle East, a business unit of Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) (Crown) (www.crowncork.com), is launching its CrownConnect™ technology in conjunction with FACT - an all-natural sparkling drink. Each can will be marked with a 2D unique scannable code, making FACT beverage cans the first ever to be produced with a unique digital identity.

To this end, Crown has partnered with tech-savvy entrepreneur Olly Bolton, to launch Almond, a blockchain platform that allows consumers to scan a unique hidden product code and rewards them by unlocking tokens that are redeemable for cash. The platform, launched in June of this year, will also unlock details of FACT Water’s story, giving unprecedented access to supply chain information and building deeper, trusting relationships with consumers that will ultimately foster brand loyalty.

Crown’s involvement in the project is very much as an enabler of the technology. As well as producing the physical beverage can for FACT Water, on which Almond will be launched, its CrownConnect™ technology provides the 2D codes beneath the tab of the beverage can that facilitate the engagement between consumer (via a scanning application) and brand. The platform, developed in partnership with IoT company EVRYTHNG then comes into effect, intuitively generating rewards and offers based on previous purchases and offering discounts and rewards to users based on their habits and the products they buy.

“The Internet of Things, and specifically blockchain technologies, will continue to drive the way brands interact with consumers and Almond is a very exciting step into this area for the beverage industry, commented Matt Twiss, Marketing and Business Development Director at Crown. “From a brand’s perspective, the value lies in the ability to capture valuable data about when and where customers consume their products. CrownConnect™ technology has been designed specifically to facilitate this level of interaction between brand and consumer and we are proud to be working with innovators such as Olly Bolton and EVRYTHNG to make beverage packaging more interactive and value-added than ever.”

Olly Bolton, Founder of Almond added: “The Almond app will allow users to interact with brands in a new completely way, directly reaping the rewards of their use of the app and pledging their allegiance to brands based on the way they approach transparency and their supply chain. Almond establishes a new type of relationship between brands and consumers: one that is symbiotic and mutually beneficial, giving consumers control and autonomy over the type of brands they buy, while also rewarding their loyalty.”

Almond-enabled cans of FACT Water are available to buy in the U.K. and selected European countries from the end of June.

Crown's Thermochromic 'Reveal' Ink Technology Makes Commercial Debut With Coca-Cola  (Company news)

As competition for consumer attention and loyalty intensifies, brands are increasingly turning to packaging to achieve differentiation on retail shelves and enhance engagement. To deliver an interactive experience to consumers before, during and after consumption, Coca-Cola has rolled out cans of Coke, Coke Zero, Fanta and Sprite in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia featuring Reveal temperature sensitive inks.

The result of collaboration between Crown Bevcan Europe & Middle East and Chromatic Technologies Inc. (CTI), Reveal inks allow graphics to change to ‘reveal’ specific imagery and messaging during consumption. Two thermochromic inks appear at the same time when the can is cold, but as the cold product is consumed, one ink disappears. This technology provides one ambient ‘original’ image, one ‘cold’ image and as the consumer drinks the contents of the can, a third image appears, offering the perfect vehicle to hide a message.

Coca-Cola featured four specific messages - one per brand – to engage with its customers in a fun, unique manner. Cans are decorated to include either a person or cartoon-style animal, from which a speech bubble emanates to hold the thermochromic messaging which appears when the can is chilled. An interactive quick response (QR) code beneath the image links to exclusive video content, driving traffic to the brand’s website.

The application represents the first commercial use of Reveal inks.
