German container glass market with positive development in 2022

Sales of container glass in 2022 were around 4.6 million tonnes. This corresponds to an increase of 4.3 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Developments both at home and abroad were positive. The Corona-related influences of recent years are no longer noticeable. The Russian war of aggression on Ukraine also had less of an impact on supply security than initially feared, especially with regard to natural gas. Thus, the production of container glass could be kept stable, even though supply chains were massively disrupted in some cases and costs rose significantly in many areas. There was no migration of glassworks abroad.

Sales of beverage bottles for non-alcoholic beverages increase
Sales in the beverage bottle segment show a positive trend in 2022 compared to the previous year, with a plus of 6.2 per cent. A look at the sub-segments shows an increase in sales in the beer and spirits (plus 6.8 per cent) and wine and sparkling wine (plus 3.5 per cent) segments. Non-alcoholic beverages (water, milk and juice) show an even more significant sales growth of 11.9 per cent. After last year's decline in sales, the upward trend of previous years seems to be continuing here.

Sales of food packaging glass stable
The segment of packaging glass for food and packaging glass for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics also closed the year 2022 positively with a sales development of 0.5 per cent. The sub-segments developed differently: In the case of packaging glass for food without OGS (fruit, vegetables and preserved sauces), sales volume fell slightly by 0.2 percent in 2022. In the sub-segment of packaging glass with OGS, a plus of 1.5 per cent was recorded for the year as a whole compared to the same period of the previous year.

"Despite the crises in the past years, the container glass market is showing itself to be stable and is even recording a positive sales trend in almost all segments. The demand for container glass remains very high. Consumers appreciate its important protective function, which optimally protects food and beverages. We are optimistic that the positive development will continue in 2023," comments Dr Johann Overath, Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Association of the German Glass Industry (Bundesverband Glasindustrie e.V.).
