Positive results for Austria's deposit system in its first year after introduction

One year after the introduction of the single-use deposit system in Austria, more than eight out of ten single-use beverage containers subject to deposit are being returned.

According to the system operator Recycling Pfand Österreich, a return rate of 81.5% was achieved in the first year of operation. Disposable beverage containers made of plastic and metal with a filling volume of 0.1 to 3.0 liters are subject to deposit.
In 2025 as a whole, 1.4 billion deposit containers were returned to the Austrian disposable deposit system. Plastic bottles and beverage cans each accounted for around half of this total.
