USA, TX: Beerburg Brewing to close for good on January 20

Another Central Texas brewery is closing. This time, it is Hill Country brewpub Beerburg Brewing, which will have its last day of service at 13476 Fitzhugh Road on Saturday, January 20, the Eater Austin reported on January 12.

Owner and founder Trevor Nearburg explained that the brewery has to close because of a bunch of reasons, according to the Instagram post published on January 11. “There’s not a single issue we can point to, but rather a confluence of social, cultural, and economic changes,” which made the brewery become “an unsustainable business.”

There will be a party during its last day, and the post teases discounts and special beers in the coming days. Eater has reached out for more information.

The production room brewed up a variety of brew styles, like the Mexican lager Paz, the East Coast hazy IPA Trail Driver, and the pilsner Pibble. Then there is its Wildcraft series, which made use of foraged ingredients such as Texas persimmons and honeycomb mushrooms.

The on-site restaurant had shifted focus through the years. It started off serving general beer-adjacent foods like cheese boards and sliders when it opened. Then it turned the kitchen into Mexican restaurant Taqueria la Violeta in April 2021, with dishes like tacos, quesadillas, and sorbets. That seemed to end sometime in 2023, and the now Beerburg Kitchen menu is now a mix of the two iterations.

The brewery also implement sustainable efforts and features, such as the on-site apiary. The space featured the beer garden and indoor taproom, and to-go beer. Nearburg opened Beerburg in January 2020, just before the pandemic.

The Central Texas brewery scene has been diminishing in recent years. 2023 saw the shutter of four breweries (Friends & Allies, Thirsty Planet, Circle Brewing, and Oskar Blues’s Austin location), not to mention the still-temporary shutter of East Austin brewery/beer garden/restaurant Koko’s.
