Verallia launches reusable pool for wine bottles - consistent implementation of the circular economy for container glass

Verallia Deutschland AG, part of Europe's leading and the world's third-largest manufacturer of glass containers for food and beverages, is investing in its own national reusable pool and is thus becoming a service provider for delivery, cleaning and return logistics in Germany.

With this project, Verallia is supporting a rethink in the wine industry: the company is contributing its extensive know-how in glass production, combined with its innovative strength, to the design and implementation of new reusable cycles.

The system consists of a newly designed 0.75-litre wine bottle, which is available in two different colours, as well as a timeless 6-bottle crate. During development, special attention was paid to creating a standardised container that is easily compatible with all types of wine. At the same time, it offers the bottler many different decoration options and meets the special requirements of a robust returnable container. The bottles are suitable for bottling wine and sparkling wine with a carbonation of up to 4g/l.

The first deliveries are planned from the 1st quarter of 2024. In this context, Verallia Deutschland AG has already entered into a partnership with Peter Riegel Weinimport, one of the most important organic wine retailers in Germany.

With the definition of the Verallia Purpose "Rethinking glass - for a sustainable future" in 2020, the group of companies has committed itself to contributing to making the circular economy attractive for the environment, people and the beverage industry. Returnable glass makes a very significant contribution here through the so-called "double circular economy", i.e. reuse up to 50 times even before 100% recycling.

"The consumer desire for ecologically advantageous packaging for wine was also impressively confirmed by broad market research," says Karsten Fuchs, board member for sales and marketing at Verallia Deutschland AG.
