According to the Federal Statistical Office, breweries based in Germany sold around 8.4 billion litres of beer last year, 4.5% less than in 2022.

This made 2023 a "pitch-black year for the German brewing industry", said Holger Eichele, Managing Director of the German Brewers' Association (DBB).

After the beer market slumped massively in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus crisis, sales had recovered somewhat in 2022 with growth of 2.7%. Breweries had therefore hoped for an end to the lean period, but this is still not in sight.
