Beer sales in Germany November 2022

In November 2022, the German beer market recorded taxed sales of around 5.9 million hectolitres. The sales figures do not take into account non-alcoholic beers, the breweries' tax-free home brew and exported volumes. Compared to the same month of the previous year, November 2021, taxed domestic sales rose by around eight percent.

Declining beer consumption in Germany
In recent years, beer sales and thus also average per capita consumption in Germany have been falling continuously. The reasons for the declining beer consumption could be the growing health awareness or the improved education about the consequences of alcohol abuse. Beer sales are influenced by the weather (as with all beverages, more is consumed on hot summer days) but also by major events such as football World Cups. The turnover of the German brewing industry has remained relatively constant in recent years at around eight billion euros.

Number of breweries growing
Despite declining sales figures, the number of breweries in the German brewing industry increased in recent years until the outbreak of the Corona virus. Microbreweries and start-ups are trying to change the market with new beer creations. The emerging craft beers also seem to be well received by consumers, although the share of small breweries in the overall market still seems relatively small.
