Cappuccino is based on the Austrian Kapuziner, a Viennese coffee speciality. The latter is a mocha that is mixed with liquid whipped cream, giving the drink a colour similar to the habit of a Capuchin monk.

The cappuccino probably originated when Austrian soldiers stationed in Italy wanted to continue drinking their usual Kapuziner. Incidentally, both coffee specialities - cappuccino and Kapuziner - are available in Austria today.

In Italy, cappuccino is drunk almost exclusively at breakfast, and in any case only in the morning.

Many coffee bars use cocoa powder or cinnamon to enhance the colour and aroma of the cream topping on the milk. In the original preparation method, the pattern and flavour are only created by mixing the crema with the milk foam.
