Coca-Cola Genshagen plant is certified climate neutral

As the first German plant of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Deutschland (CCEP DE), the production site in Genshagen near Berlin has been certified as climate-neutral by Lloyd's Register. This is an important milestone for the beverage manufacturer - the company aims to achieve net zero emissions along the entire value chain by 2040. CCEP DE follows the approach: first reduce, then compensate. In the period from 2014 to 2021, emissions from the Genshagen plant were reduced by around 70 per cent. Further measures are intended to ensure that the site remains climate-neutral in the future.

CO2 footprint has been reduced for many years
"When it comes to efficiency, the Coca-Cola plant in Genshagen was a pioneer for our other German production sites at a very early stage," says Mario Drescher, environmental and energy coordinator in Genshagen. "For more than ten years, we have been working to reduce our footprint by modernising machinery and equipment and constantly optimising processes. We've made big savings, especially by using 100 per cent renewable energy and reducing the blowing pressure on the bottle blowing machines."

Genshagen site paves the way for innovative projects
In line with CCEP DE's sustainability strategy, it is not only energy efficiency that is being increased at the Genshagen plant. High water efficiency, complete recycling or sufficient material collection also have a positive impact on the plant's CO2 balance and are therefore continuously adjusted. "To reduce our CO2 footprint, we focus on the economical use of all resources. We are also digitising processes to make them more efficient," adds Ina Asendorf, plant manager at the Genshagen site. With only 1.16 litres of water per litre of finished beverage, Genshagen is the most water-efficient Coca-Cola production site in Germany. 97 percent of all residual materials from production are recycled. The digital platform NXT Labs also acts as a driver for innovative projects. Employees in Genshagen test new ideas and solutions in a digital project room.

Plant manager: "We have to further reduce our CO2 emissions".
The plant was certified according to PAS2060, the only internationally recognised standard for climate neutrality of companies and products, which also sets measurement and reduction targets. "In order to be certified as a climate-neutral site, we had to prove that we have significantly reduced our emissions in recent years and plan to reduce our emissions further in the future. Compensation via certificates is not sufficient," explains Asendorf. "For 2023, we are therefore planning to modernise the high-pressure compressors."

As in Genshagen, specialised staff at all 14 Coca-Cola production sites in Germany are continuously identifying further savings potential. They have their sights firmly set on the climate goal: to achieve net zero emissions as a company along the entire value chain by 2040. From 2010 to 2022, CCEP DE was already able to reduce its CO2 footprint along the entire value chain by around 35 percent.

Importance of the Genshagen site
"The certification of the Coca-Cola production site in Genshagen as a climate-neutral plant is another outstanding milestone for sustainable action at this location," says Andreas Igel, Mayor of Ludwigsfelde. "Since the founding of this plant, the topic of sustainability has been promoted with emphasis and as a role model within the Coca-Cola group of companies. For example, when the site was founded, attention was paid to highly efficient water use and in 2017 the Circular Economy project was introduced, in which 97 percent of all materials used are reused. We are proud to have such a future-oriented partner here at the Ludwigsfelde site!"

The plant was commissioned in 1999. Around 180 employees fill around 1.2 million bottles a day on three production lines.
