Laternmaß - The Extraordinary Mixed Drink in a Stein
News News blog
The Laternmaß, also known as Lotarn, Laterndlmaß, or Laternenmaß, is a special alcoholic mixed drink served in a stein. The drink usually consists of white wine or Helles, lemon soda, and cherry liqueur.
Origin and Regional Names
The Laternmaß is particularly well-known in Bavaria and Hesse. Depending on the region, there are different names for the drink, such as Schlusslicht, Lateramaß, or Lichtlamoos. In Hesse, apple wine is often used instead of white wine.
Preparation of the Laternmaß
For the preparation, you need a stein and a champagne glass or shot glass. There are two variants:
Fill the stein with white wine spritzer or shandy and place the glass filled with liqueur inside so that it stands at the bottom. Or: Place the stemmed glass filled with cherry liqueur in the stein and then fill it up with white wine spritzer.
Due to the glass in the stein, the drink initially looks like a lantern. While drinking, the glass tips over, and the cherry liqueur gradually mixes with the rest - so the Laternmaß becomes "sweeter" with each sip.
Where Can You Find the Laternmaß?
The Laternmaß can be found mainly in Bavarian and Hessian restaurants and at folk festivals. But the mixed drink can also be easily prepared at home. You need the following ingredients:
0.5 liters of white wine or light beer
0.5 liters of lemon soda
0.1-0.2 liters of cherry liqueur
With the Laternmaß, you can surprise guests and end the evening with an extraordinary drink. Simply give it a try!
