Number of breweries in Germany declines

In recent years since the Corona pandemic began, the number of beer breweries in Germany has fallen, most recently to 1,507 in 2022, after rising steadily in previous years. Although sales and average per capita consumption of beer in Germany have fallen over the same period, small microbreweries and startups are trying to gain a foothold in the market with new beer creations.

Growth in brewery numbers through craft beer
Small breweries with an annual beer output of up to 50,000 hectoliters account for a minimal share of the total annual production of the popular alcoholic beverage, but this has risen steadily, if only minimally, in recent years. The market for craft beer variations is growing and providing a welcome change among consumers.

Consumption of alcoholic beverages declining
The average per capita consumption of alcoholic beverages has also seen a decline in recent years. However, while the spirits, wine and sparkling wine segments have remained relatively constant, beer consumption among German consumers is falling steadily. A growing awareness of personal health or improved education about the risks of excessive alcohol consumption may be reasons for this.
