O-I plans to close the Bernsdorf glassworks

The US glass manufacturer Owens-Illinois (O-I) plans to close the Bernsdorf glassworks.
The company had completely renovated the tank at the Saxony plant in 2020, but now the site is facing closure. The reasons for the planned closure are persistently challenging market conditions in Germany – including overcapacity and intense competition – which make it necessary to adjust capacity. According to earlier information, the capacity of the melting tank with two lines is around 150 million glass bottles per year.
“We understand the concern of many people in Bernsdorf and take the concerns expressed seriously. O‐I has announced the intended closure of the plant in Bernsdorf and is conducting the legally required information and consultation process with employee representatives. Our goal is to make this process transparent and responsible and to work together to find solutions for those affected,” the company told EUWID.
