Pomada - drink speciality from Menorca

Pomada - no, it has nothing to do with hair gel or an ingredient in lipstick. Pomada is a drink speciality from Menorca and is particularly popular at various festivals.

When the British occupied Menorca around 1708, they also brought gin with them, which enjoy(s) great popularity in Menorca. The special feature of the Menorcan variants is that they do not contain grain-based alcohol, but wine alcohol.

Menorcan gin is colourless and clear and has a distinct smell. When consumed, it develops a gentle and at the same time fruity juniper berry aroma that is not found in any other European gin variety and is distantly reminiscent of genever.

The drink of choice in Menorca is Pomada, a cocktail of gin, bitter lemon or lemonade (Sprite or Fanta lemon) plus lemon juice with more or less ice. With a mixing ratio of up to 50% gin, Pomada quickly unfolds its full effect.
