Russian Imperial Stout - English beer for the Russian Tsarina

This beer was brewed in England in the 18th century as a gift for the Russian Tsarina Catherine the Great. As the court beer of the Tsar's house, Imperial Stout gained great popularity in Russia, the Baltic States and England.

Over time, however, this beer style almost fell into oblivion. In the meantime, numerous smaller breweries in England and especially in the USA have rediscovered this highly aromatic beer style and are brewing it again.

A large proportion of roasted malts is used in its production. These provide the deep black color and the strong coffee and chocolate notes in Imperial Stout. Imperial stouts usually have an alcohol content of 8 to 10 percent alcohol; some are considerably higher. Due to the high alcohol content, aging times of up to three months are common.
