'Beer serious' or merry with wine? Which type are you?

According to Heinz Küpper's Illustrated Lexicon of German Colloquial Language (Volume 1, Stuttgart 1982), the expression "bierernst" ('beer serious') goes back to the assumption that the enjoyment of wine makes one upbeat and cheerful, while beer, on the other hand, makes the drinker thoughtful and serious. Küpper has known bierernst, (also as the corresponding noun Bierernst - 'beer seriousness') already since 1900.
