Social component
But most Italians don't sit at the table drinking coffee, they stand at the coffee bar. Because that is where all kinds of people come together - rich and poor, working class and millionaire alike - and the pleasure of coffee brings them together. And it' is much easier to make contact with other people at the bar than when you are sitting alone at the table.

Some like it hot
Italians like their coffee really hot - very hot. By the time the barista has taken the coffee from the bar to the table where the guest is sitting, the coffee is already too cold for Italians. But at the bar counter it is still really hot directly after being brewed.

It is cheaper when standing
In Italy, coffee is generally cheap because it is a staple food and must therefore be affordable for everyone. That's why there is a fixed price limit, but it only applies to coffee that is drunk while standing at the bar.
