In Germany, the geese seem to live like God in France, one might think at the term "goose wine" .... For apparently the geese drink wine here.... or do they?
In earlier times, simple people often kept goats, chickens and geese to improve their food situation. At that time, ordinary people could not afford luxury food such as real wine.
In analogy to the drinking habits of geese, the self-ironic term "goose wine" was coined for normal drinking water. The term is first documented around 1577 in the "Podagrammisch Trostbüchlein" by Johann Fischart, according to which the water is the wine given to the geese by God.
In English the appropriate term here would be "Adams wine".
