A NEW APPROACH TO NON-ALCOHOLIC BEER: HEINEKEN® 0.0 WITH NATURAL FLAVORS
News General news
Heineken® 0.0, the world’s best-selling non-alcoholic beer, is expanding its flavor portfolio to include Lime Lemongrass and Nectarine Juniper. These innovations featuring natural flavors and Heineken® 0.0 fill a previously untapped niche and directly capitalize on the unbroken trend toward non-alcoholic beverages. Upon their market launch in early September, both varieties will initially be available for six months in 0.33-liter cans at Kaufland.
MORE VARIETY ON THE NON-ALCOHOLIC SHELF
The market for non-alcoholic beers is growing—and with it, consumers’ desire for genuine variety and new taste experiences. Heineken® 0.0, named the “coolest non-alcoholic beer in the world,” now provides the answer with a light, not-too-sweet flavor profile. Lime Lemongrass impresses with fresh citrus aromas, while Nectarine Juniper has a fruity and subtly spicy flavor. The familiar taste of Heineken® 0.0 takes center stage in both varieties.
UNIQUE IN ITS CATEGORY
What sets Heineken® 0.0 Lime Lemongrass and Nectarine Juniper apart from other products on the market is the combination of non-alcoholic beer and natural flavors, which creates a fruity, sophisticated flavor profile. Classic mixed beers—such as Radler—use fruit juices or sodas and consequently have higher sugar content. Heineken® 0.0 uses all-natural flavors with no added sugar and no artificial ingredients.
The result: a beverage that tastes light and fresh, without an overpowering sweetness. The beer base lends it a maturity that clearly sets it apart from classic soft drinks. Yet the beverage contains only 1.2 g of sugar and 19 kcal per 100 ml. It’s not a beer mix, a Radler, or a lemonade—but rather the launch of a new category: “Non-Alcoholic Flavored Beer.”
NON-ALCOHOLIC IS NO LONGER A NICHE
“Today, people who choose not to drink beer rarely do so out of deprivation, but rather out of conviction,” explains Jan Stickelmann, Country Manager Germany at HEINEKEN Germany. A mindful approach to alcohol has become the norm: Nearly a quarter of consumers drink less than they used to, with a large portion of them motivated by a health-conscious lifestyle. At the same time, the category’s growth is being driven by new flavors. “Heineken® 0.0 Lime Lemongrass and Nectarine Juniper are the new answer to mindful enjoyment—with natural ingredients and great taste,” summarizes Christian Schneider, Head of Strategic Brands at HEINEKEN Germany. The joint study by Professor Charles Spence of the University of Oxford and Heineken® concludes that for a growing group—especially among young adults—alcohol is no longer a given in social situations. What’s in demand is flexibility, not abstinence.
STRONG TEST RESULTS
Market research also confirms that the combination of modern flavors in a non-alcoholic, no-added-sugar format works exceptionally well for the target audience: In a quantitative study conducted by Ipsos, the “Heineken® 0.0 Flavored” concept achieved a score of 113 and was classified as a “Winner Archetype”—the highest rating category awarded by Ipsos. Among the target audience of 18- to 39-year-olds, the Trial Index stands at 120, underscoring the product’s particular relevance to younger consumers. 81% of respondents are enthusiastic about the product. The product also consistently performed strongly in qualitative research, including taste tests.
