V6‐engine six‐pack: Olutmylly’s tasting pack co‐created with Metsä Board
News General news
A small Finnish brewery had a big idea: turn a V6-engine into a six-pack that showcases six beers – and the brand. Together with Metsä Board’s packaging design team, Olutmylly brought the concept from sketch to shelf, blending bold design with practical carry, chill and recycle features.
From idea to shelf: a fast co‐creation
Olutmylly, a family brewery in South Finland, wanted a tasting pack that would both showcase six different beers and elevate its brand at retail. In a crowded beverage market, standing out visually is critical for survival. Supermarket shelves are filled with products in every shape, size, color and style, so a distinctive design becomes essential for differentiation. The V6‐engine silhouette delivers that impact, combining bold aesthetics with practical features through rapid co‐creation with Metsä Board’s packaging design team.
Why design matters for brand and business
Innovative packaging does more than protect the product. It strengthens brand awareness and loyalty. When a design breaks away from the norm in a positive way, it attracts attention, drives sales and supports premium positioning. Eye‐catching, memorable structures like the V6‐engine carrier help brands stand out and justify higher price points, while reinforcing identity in a competitive market.
A V6-engine design for enthusiasts
Graphic Packaging Designer Marko Leiviskä shaped the carrier like a V6‐engine so the cans “pop like pistons” – a playful nod to Olutmylly’s customers from motorsports community. The structure reserves space for cooler packs, offers a comfortable carry, and supports material recovery after use. This combination of visual impact and functional benefits demonstrates how design can elevate both brand experience and usability.
Rapid prototyping at the Excellence Centre
Prototyping and testing took place at Metsä Board’s Excellence Centre in Äänekoski, where the team optimises design, materials and recyclability to accelerate launches and improve production efficiency. In this project, co‐creation helped turn a bold concept into a shelf‐ready reality.
