Vodka Nikolashka - alcohol in the sauna

In principle, it is better to stay away from alcohol during a sauna. However, there are old customs that should not be missed during the Russian banya (sauna) ceremony. A so-called "Vodka Nikolashka" (vodka with lemon) should be served before or at the beginning of the ceremony. As a non-alcoholic alternative, the sauna guest is given a glass of warm water with lemon.

Ingredients:

  • 4cl vodka
  • 1 approx. 5mm thick slice of lemon
  • 1/2 tsp coffee powder
  • 1/2 tsp sugar

Preparation:

  • Pour the vodka into a shooter glass.
  • Place the lemon slice on the glass
  • Put the coffee and sugar on half of the lemon slice each

This is how it is drunk

  1. Place the lemon slice on your tongue with the coffee and sugar facing down.
  2. Put the vodka in your mouth
  3. Leave to take effect for 30 seconds
  4. Then swallow without the lemon

More modern saunas also serve vodka with a fruit in a glass at the start of the infusion, which is of course quicker and less awkward to drink.
