Since 2017, these fruity winter specialties have recorded continuous growth, with the exception of the coronavirus year 2020. "Apple and fruit mulled wines have a firm place in the seasonal beverage range and are quite successful in decoupling themselves from how good the winter weather is in the run-up to Christmas. Apple and fruit wine producers are therefore optimistic about the coming mulled wine season," explains Klaus Heitlinger, managing director of the Association of the German Fruit Wine and Fruit Sparkling Wine Industry (VdFw).

While classic mulled wine is made with grape wine, apple or fruit wine forms the basis for fruity hot drinks. Cherry, blueberry, and apple mulled wine are the most popular, followed by various berry mulled wines. In addition to typical Christmas apple and fruit mulled wines spiced with cinnamon and cloves, there are now also spicier varieties such as ginger or chili. The drinks are ready to drink and only need to be heated.

Domestic sales of apple and fruit mulled wine:
2017: 9.2 million liters
2018: 9.4 million liters
2019: 9.4 million liters
2020: 6.8 million liters
2021: 9.5 million liters
2022: 11.7 million liters
2023: 10.9 million liters
2024: 10.6 million liters
