Out of indignation, people sometimes shout "That knocks the bottom out of the barrel!" But where does this German saying actually come from?

In 1516, the "Purity Law" was passed in Bavaria, which stipulated exactly which ingredients could be used in the production of beer. The Purity Law was strictly monitored. If beer was discovered in a brewery that had been prepared with prohibited ingredients, it was immediately destroyed. And the bottom of the barrel was knocked out. This meant that all the beer ran out onto the floor and could no longer be drunk.

The phrase "that knocks the bottom out of the barrel" has survived to this day - for something that causes great indignation. In the past, everyone involved was probably outraged in such a case - the beer inspectors because the purity law had not been observed, the brewer because he could no longer sell the barrel of beer and the potential beer drinkers who could no longer drink the beer...
