What does Ti Punch mean?
Ti Punch is the Creole abbreviation for ‘Petit Punch’, which means ‘little punch’ in French. The name reflects the humble yet powerful nature of this cocktail. In the Caribbean, it is often simply referred to as ‘Ti’ and is considered the national drink of Martinique and Guadeloupe.

The origins of Ti Punch
Ti Punch originates from the French West Indies, specifically Martinique and Guadeloupe. Its history dates back to the 17th century, when French colonists began mixing local rum with limes and cane sugar.
Originally, plantation workers drank this mixture as a pick-me-up whilst working hard in the sugar cane fields. Over time, Ti Punch evolved into a cultural symbol of French-Caribbean identity and became an indispensable part of social gatherings.

The three sacred ingredients
An authentic Ti Punch consists of just three basic ingredients:
Rhum Agricole forms the heart of the cocktail. This special rum is distilled directly from fresh sugarcane juice, not from molasses. This gives it its characteristic grassy flavour, which sets it apart from other types of rum.
Lime provides the necessary freshness and acidity. Traditionally, small Caribbean limes are used, but standard limes work perfectly well too.
Sirop de canne is a sugarcane syrup that gives the drink its natural sweetness. It harmonises perfectly with Rhum Agricole, as both are derived from the same plant.

The traditional method
The preparation follows a simple yet precise method: first, place a slice of lime and a teaspoon of cane sugar syrup into a small glass. Gently press the lime to release the essential oils, but do not crush it.
Next, add around 5 cl of rhum agricole and stir gently. Ice is optional – traditionally, Ti Punch is served at room temperature, though modern variations often use ice cubes.

Ti Punch today
Today, Ti Punch is enjoying a renaissance on the international cocktail scene. Bartenders appreciate its authenticity and the quality of the Rhum Agricole. The drink embodies the principle of ‘less is more’ and demonstrates how three perfectly balanced ingredients can create an exceptional cocktail.
